Netflix + Strong Black Lead
A Great Day in Hollywood
Graced by luminaries like Spike Lee, Ava Duvernay, Laverne Cox, Lena Waithe, Justin Simien and more, A Great Day in Hollywood anchors around a powerful monologue by Stranger Things’ Caleb McLaughlin.

Project Overview

Netflix understands there’s no one way to be Black, and A Great Day in Hollywood, which recreates the iconic 1958 Kane photo, A Great Day in Harlem, is a bold mission statement to assure this truth.
Renown photographer Kwaku Alston was chosen to recreate the iconic photo featuring the cast of 47 actors, directors, and show runners from 20-plus Netflix Original shows, films and documentaries.
A Great Day in Hollywood supported Netflix's ongoing social initiative, @Strong BlackLead, which elevates Black storytellers, luminaries, and talent from exclusive content created and curated for the streaming service.

The spot aired during the 2018 BET Awards with powerful results that inspired and informed Black audiences that this was not just a celebratory “pat ourselves on the back” moment, but a true and actual movement.
The project solidified Netflix social media channels, @strongblacklead IG and @strongblackead Twitter, as a lasting platform representing Netflix's ongoing intentional focus to talk authentically with black audiences, and as a way for Netflix to connect with the community about series and films they love.
Nominated for the Emmys 71st “Outstanding Commercial” category, the project was a promise and proof that the streaming service is leading the shift in Hollywood to elevate black talent, creators, and stories.
